NFL Bet Type FAQ
As a US rather than UK or European based sports league, the betting options related to the NFL are somewhat different to those which UK based punters may be used to. To help you get a better handle on what options are available, we've defined and explained three of the most popular NFL bet types below.
Moneyline – Probably the simplest and most straightforward of NFL bets, a moneyline wager is quite simply a bet on which of the two teams in the contest you think will win. A bet with only two options, it refers to the final result of a game either at the end of normal time or after the period of overtime which NFL games always have if they end tied.

Handicap (Spread) – Handicap betting is probably the most popular type of gambling on the NFL and American football in general. For each game, bookmakers will assign a number of points by which they believe a team to be favourites of underdogs and a handicap bet is a wager on that team to exceed that expectation.
A team, for example, may be given a handicap of -7 which means that they are expected to win by seven points. A handicap bet on them at -7, therefore, is a bet which pays out if they win by eight points or more. A bet on their opponents at +7, meanwhile, is successful if that team wins or loses by fewer than seven points.
Total Points (Over/Under) – The third of our trio of most popular NFL bet types, total points bets ask punters to bet on whether there will be over or under a certain points total scored in any given match. The exact points total for the over/under varies from one game to another and is set by each individual bookmaker.
